Legal and Political Anthropology

We consider the links between legal and political processes and other areas of social, cultural and economic life, as well as investigating the inherent meanings and social significances of systems of law. We have expertise on legal and political issues as these relate to the environment, including land and resource rights, marine law, and governance. We have a wide ranging regional research knowledge including areas of Southern Africa, East-Central and West Africa. In particular we focus on:

  • Fisheries conflict and mediation
  • Heritage (tangible/intangible) and the law
  • The anthropology of human rights
  • Social and environmental justice
  • Human-animal-more than human relationships
  • Legal pluralism
