Overview
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease, leading to right ventricular (RV) failure and death. Though the pathology in PAH begins with an obstructive vasculopathy in the lungs, the prognosis is mainly determined by RV function. However, there is no effective drug directly targeting the RV. This project will identify novel therapeutic targets for RV in PAH using both animal model, clinical samples and a range of metabolomics and proteomics technologies.Eligibility
Applicants should have a minimum of a UK Upper Second (2:1) undergraduate degree or equivalent, in Biomedical Sciences, or a strongly related discipline. Applicants will also need to meet the University’s English Language requirements. A strong background in cardiovascular pathophysiology, experience in in vivo animal study, experience in biological studies such as IHC/westernblot, or a Master’s degree in related discipline is a plus.

Project Details
We are seeking a highly-motivated PhD candidate starting from 1st of October, 2024 to work on a project focused on identifying novel therapies targeting the right ventricle (RV) in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. Lian Tian (cardiovascular physiology: in vivo and in vitro studies) and Dr. Nicholas Rattray (metabolomics and biomolecular modelling) within Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde.
As a PhD student, you will be fully immersed in a dynamic research environment that fosters both national and international collaboration. And you will have the opportunity to gain skills including in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro experiments, proteomic data analysis, preparing posters and presentation in conferences, and writing peer-reviewed papers.
