Honorary DegreesLouise Kingham

Meet Louise

Louise Kingham CBE is a widely recognised champion of the energy system and is currently Senior Vice President, Europe, and Head of Country, UK at BP.

Marshalling change in energy systems

Louise has had a career-long interest in the future of energy, working at the intersection of business, policy, and education to identify solutions for long-term societal challenges, such as where our energy comes from and how we bring more energy to people, while removing the emissions as we do so. She's passionate about inclusion and fairness of opportunity for all, recognising that diverse teams make the most productive and creative high-performing teams.

Before joining BP in 2021, Louise was best known for her role as CEO of the Energy Institute, where she worked on energy industry policy, the development of good practice within the industry, and learning opportunities for people interested in energy.

Significant contributions

From 1993 to 2002, Louise made significant contributions at the Institute of Energy, culminating in being appointed CEO at the age of 27. Her expertise and leadership were soon recognised, leading to her appointment as Director General of the Institute of Petroleum in 2002. The following year, she moved into the role of Chief Executive at the Energy Institute. Under her leadership, the Energy Institute was incorporated by Royal Charter in 2003 and expanded its influence to work with members and other stakeholders in more than 100 countries worldwide. Louise spent almost two decades building the Energy Institute and its membership. In that time, she brought together more than 200 UK and International companies and 20,000 individual members with a common interest in providing the energy the world needs today and for the future.

Global leadership in Energy

In 2006, Louise was honored with the Global Leadership in Energy Award. She also played a pivotal role as a founding board member and ambassador of the Powerful Women Energy Leaders Coalition, advocating for greater representation of women in the energy sector. Her influence grew as she was appointed Deputy Chair of the UK Engineering Technology Board’s Professional Panel in 2009. She also served as president of the Energy Industries Club and took on a variety of non-executive director roles in parallel to her executive career. In 2011, Louise was awarded an OBE for services to the energy industry, and in 2022 was further recognised with a CBE for continuing her service to the industry. Today, she retains a plc board membership of VH Global Energy Infrastructure plc, a sustainable energy investment trust.

She is a leader, teambuilder, networker, and partner who is recognised in the UK and internationally for her experience in public policy and stakeholder engagement in an industry fundamental to us all.
