We love graduation and one of the most exciting parts of the season is meeting our Honorary Graduates. We caught up with a few of them ahead of their graduation ceremonies to find out how they felt about receiving their Honorary Degree, and what words of wisdom they had for our Strathclyde graduates.
Robina Qureshi
Robina Qureshi is an internationally recognsed human rights campaigner. She is the founder and CEO of Scottish charity Positive Action in Housing, and has dedicated 30 years to anti-racism and human rights work.
Lilian Thuram
Lilian Thuram is an internationally renowned public figure, one of France's most celebrated footballers and one of the greatest of his generation, and an anti-racism activist and educator. After retiring as a footballer, he created the Lilian Thuram Foundation for Education against racism, which has been very active in bringing his anti-racist message to schoolchildren not only in France, but also around the world.
Lauren Mayberry
Lauren Mayberry is the Scottish singer, musician and songwriter with Glasgow-born band Chvrches, has a Law degree and a Masters in Journalism from us here at the University of Strathclyde, and is a patron of Rape Crisis Glasgow. She has supported charities including Water Aid, Amnesty International, Plus One and the Ally Coalition and has been outspoken on issues of sexism and abuse.
John Scally
Dr John Scally is widely regarded by his peers as one of the leading librarians in Europe. With more than 25 years of experience working in libraries, museums, and galleries, he was The National Librarian and Chief Executive of The National Library of Scotland (NLS), which plays a leading role in Scotland's cultural life.
Maureen Robinson
Maureen Robinson worked in the whisky industry for 45 years until her retirement in 2022. During her career, she rose to the post of Master Blender - one of the first women in the industry to hold this title, and has been an inspiration for other women throughout her career.
Stuart Patrick
Stuart Patrick has been central to the Scottish economy, business community, and the city of Glasgow for more than 20 years. He’s provided inspiring leadership as the Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
Sir Patrick Vallance
Patrick Vallance is a British physician, scientist, and clinical pharmacologist who's worked in both academia and industry. He's served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, the National Technology Adviser, and the Head of the Government Science and Engineering Profession.
Professor Ann Skelton
Professor Ann Skelton is a respected global figure in international children’s rights with a track record in both research and legal practice. She transformed children’s rights through strategic litigation in South Africa, and is an elected member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow
Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow is a Scottish social entrepreneur who founded the global charity Mary’s Meals, which provides daily meals to 2.4 million children in their place of education across 18 countries.
Peter Duthie
Peter Duthie is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SEC Limited, the award-winning events venue and national asset based in Glasgow, and one of Europe’s most successful event venues. SEC has a significant economic impact bringing nearly £0.5 billion to Glasgow annually.
