During the apartheid era, the Kosi Bay community in South Africa was removed from their ancestral land for purposes of nature conservation. One Ocean Hub supported mapping of their culturally relevant areas and customs, as evidence of their customary and human rights and ecological knowledge of the area. “By mapping fish traps, we can prove that the community’s customary system includes fishing rights”, Wilmien Wicomb (Legal Resources Center)
