How the Careers Service can help you

The Careers Service offers specialist support to PhD students and graduates.  All of the information about our services and support for PhDs can be found below.

You can book in-person and online appointments with your Faculty Careers and Employability Consultant for:

  • 30 minute CV/Application/Cover Letter Check
  • 60 minute Guidance Appointments
  • 45 minute Practice Interviews

All PhD appointments are booked in the same way as guidance appointments. This is not the same system as undergraduate or Masters students use to book CV appointments as PhD CVs typically require more time.

Find out more about these different appointment types and how to book them through our Appointments page.

Find your Faculty Careers Consultant on our meet the team page.

You can find more general FAQs on our FAQ pages.

Q. Why is appointment booking different for PhD students?
A. PhD CVs and Cover Letters are longer and typically require more time than UG or MSc students.

Q. Does the Careers service offer support with non-academic careers?
A. Yes! We’re here to help with your career, whatever your aims are.

Q. Does the Careers service offer support with part-time work?
A. Yes. We can help you with where to look and how to make effective applications.

Q. Does the Careers service help with research proposals?
A. No. We aren’t academics and don’t have the expertise in your field to help with research. Your supervisor is a good place to start here.

Our events are open to PhD students, but some may be more suitable than others. Where an event is intended for a specific cohort of students this should be clear in the event description.

Find out more about the types of events we run on our events page or book through our Events Calendar

Departments and faculties may also organise events such as conferences or guest speakers, these may be of particular interest to PhD students.
