Pure & Applied ChemistryConfirmed Undergraduate Offer Holders

Welcome

Welcome to the department of Pure & Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde!

We’re very pleased that you’ve joined us, and we look forward to officially welcoming you to campus at the start of Welcome (Fresher’s) Week. Your degree induction day will start on our main campus just before 10am on Monday of Welcome (Fresher’s) Week, with the location and exact timing sent to you by email. The rest of that week will have some chemistry-specific activities, university-wide induction events, and many fresher’s events laid on by Strath Union.

To get started with university-wide induction, visit the StrathLife page at this link.

You can access a full Chemistry Welcome Week timetable and list of key dates by registering and then gaining access to MyPlace (see later). Keep that week free, and plan to be based in Glasgow from the start of that week onwards.

Acclimation days

Before the start of your degree, but after you’ve accepted an offer from us, you will be invited to attend one of our acclimation visits in the summer. On one of these visits, you will get a tour of the department and a chance to ask questions and chat with some of the academic staff involved in delivering your first year studies.

Registration

You will be required to officially “Register” for your degree – the university will already have sent you information on how to do this and you can find out more at the Registration page, linked here. You should register as soon as you are asked to do so, well before the start of term. It will issue you with access to your university email address and several other systems required to organise and manage your degree.

Personal Development Advisor

You are now embarking on a journey to towards expert chemist, so as well as being taught directly by experts, you will also have a Personal Development Adviser (PDA). This person is an expert chemist working in one of our strategic research areas, and will work with you over your entire degree, to help you take control of your own learning. They will work alongside the expert advisers of the University’s Careers Service, to prepare you for your future beyond graduation.

MyPlace

All of our teaching is supported by a Virtual Learning Environment called MyPlace. You will gain access to this in early August, and some pre-induction material will be available there, including Welcome (Fresher’s) Week timetables, programme handbooks, and information about how to make any optional module choices available to you (electives). You will need to use MyPlace very regularly from the very first day of your studies, so please test out your access before you start!

Programme Representatives

The Student Union, #StrathUnion, runs a student voice system that allows you to have your say about your education. They will be holding elections for programme representatives during the first few weeks of term, so please consider putting yourself forward. It’ll look great on your CV, and it’s a really important mechanism for making your own learning experience even better.

Disability

If you declared on your application that you require a specific learning adjustment plan, our Disability and Wellbeing Service will contact you for more information. This may require you to submit existing documentation, or attend a meeting to get your needs assessed. If you did not declare this on your application, but require a disability assessment or adjustment, please contact us from your Strathclyde email address, using the general inquiry email address on the right.
