We're a leading, international technological university located in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city. We believe in useful learning which guides our research, our learning and teaching and the way we work with businesses and organisations.

We have a long history of welcoming students from Germany, both on exchange and for full undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

At the moment we have almost 300 German students at Strathclyde studying across all four faculties but we'd love to see more of you here.

We welcome applications from well qualified students.

Getting here

You can fly from Berlin with easyJet direct to Glasgow International Airport (GLA) or form Frankfurt to Edinburgh Airport with Ryanair.

Glasgow city centre and our University are only 20 minutes away by car or by the airport bus from Glasgow International Airport or around an hour from Edinburgh Airport.

Strathclyde International Society

Run by students, for students, the International Society is the first stop for all international students arriving at Strathclyde.

It's the perfect place to meet new people and learn about many different countries and cultures. You can learn more about Glasgow and Scotland too.

There are weekly international pub, movie and games nights which are regularly attended by more than 100 people from countries across the world.

The International Society loves to get out of the city for a bit of sightseeing too. Recent trips have included:

  • Edinburgh Zoo
  • Isle of Arran
  • Stonehaven
  • Isle of Skye
  • Ben Nevis
  • Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter trip)

If you're joining us here at Strathclyde, you can add the Strathclyde International Society as a friend on Facebook to keep up to date with what they're doing and where they meet. You can also email the team for any other information.

We're looking forward to seeing you at Strathclyde!

Entry requirements

We recognise a wide range of European qualifications, including:

  • Abitur
  • International Baccalaureate.

For some degree programmes, we may expect you to have studied specific subjects within the Abitur eg, where we ask applicants taking Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Highers for a specific subject(s), we may ask you for the same subject(s).

For entry with the Abitur we require a grade of between 1-3.

For further information on entry requirements, please contact our representative Siobhan McGurk (

English language requirements

If English isn't your first language, you'll need to provide proof of English language proficiency from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English (PTE).

Our IELTS requirement is 6.5, however some courses may look for more.

Our requirement is 62 overall (minimum competent score 51).

Other tests

Other English language tests may be acceptable so just get in touch for any advice.

Improving your English

If you need to improve your English to meet the language conditions of your degree offer, you can take one of our ELT English language courses here without needing to re-take IELTS or another English language test

How to apply

Apply through our course pages.

Get in touch

If you're in any doubt about the entry requirements, just get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

While you're here

Glasgow has so much to see and do while you're here. The city has a Goethe Institute, which promotes German culture. The University also has a German Society for students interested in the German language.

Shopping & entertainment

Our music scene, bars and restaurants are renowned and we've one of the best shopping experiences in the UK.

There are museums, numerous sporting venues and more than 90 parks, with the oldest - Glasgow Green - a 10-minute walk from our campus.

Glasgow is also a great base for exploring Scotland's beautiful lochs and mountains or for flying to some of Europe's most attractive destinations.

Strath Union

The student union here at Strathclyde is a great place to grab a bite to eat and catch up with friends between classes.

Like us, it's based in the middle of the city centre and is an array of events, clubs and societies that you can join.

Eating out

There are loads of places to grab a quick sandwich or have a longer, relaxed lunch or dinner around here.

There are also two Bier Houses, offering a taste of Germany, in Glasgow city centre:

Keep an eye on The List for some more places to eat.

Loans are available for postgraduate EU students. Take a look at the Student Awards Agency Scotland website for further information.

Check out our scholarships database to find out more about all scholarships and funding opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
