Technology & Innovation Zone 5G & Advanced Communications
As part of the development of the Technology and Innovation Zone, 5G Advanced Communications cluster will be a visible platform for collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing in the development, delivery and applications of the next generation of 5G digital infrastructure, use cases and technologies.
Combining leading academic knowledge from the University 5G Technology Team alongside industry experts the vision is to create a vibrant and internationally visible 5G technology cluster. The centre features large scale industry, government and academic research and development projects alongside delivery and deployment projects to work closely with key partners and local organisations while linking into the Scotland 5G Centre, which is hosted by the University of Strathclyde in the Technology and Innovation Centre building.
What is 5G?
In simple terms, 5G is the new generation of wireless technology. It will bring new levels of capacity to the existing technology have brought with higher speeds of data, lower latency (the time between instructing a wireless device to perform an action and that action being completed), higher energy efficiency and improved performance.
However, 5G will be more than just a "4G upgrade". The prospect of next generation private networks, and deployment strategies such as neutral hosting, open RAN and cloud services we can expect to see rapid growth and emerging new use cases and growth in markets such as transportation, satellite and space, manufacturing, health-tech, and applications exploiting augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).
How can I work with the 5G and Advanced Communications cluster?
There are a number of ways you can engage with the 5G cluster, whether you are looking for expertise or co-location opportunities.
We have experience working with a wide range of partners including tier 1 companies, SMEs, academic and civic partners, and also supporting startups. Our team has also been a leading partner in a number of large scale programmes funded by the likes of DCMS and InnovateUK.

The 5G and Advanced Communications cluster can work with you on
Through the cluster, you can gain access to know-how and existing baseline infrastructure to accelerate your product development in both rural and urban locations. The cluster is also focussing on next-generation software-defined radios (SDR) for spectrum efficient, low latency, high data rate and ultra-dense networks. The team are interested in joint research, development and design projects with Government funding through Innovate UK. Opportunities are also available for collaboration on extensive mobile, wireless and 5G engineering and access to advisory teams and groups for the development, delivery and applications of the next generation of 5G digital infrastructure, use cases and technologies.
The cluster can work with you on PhD and internship sponsorships and direct research collaboration resulting in no increase in headcount for your organisation. The cluster also has opportunities for Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT) and doctoral training including opportunities for industrial co-op PhD Studentships and 5G continuous professional development.
There is also the opportunity to co-locate within Glasgow City Innovation District and integrate with the other industrial clusters including FinTech, HealthTech, Industrial Informatics, Quantum and Space.
Scotland 5G Centre
The University of Strathclyde is one of the founding partners of the Scotland 5G Centre. The Centre is hosted by Strathclyde in the heart of the district in the University's Technology and Innovation Centre.
The Scotland 5G Centre aims to provide a focus for the partnership of industry, academia, and government and civic partners. Strathclyde are leading on the Wave 1 Rural project.
