Postgraduate admissions FAQs
Submitting your application
When completing your application in Pegasus, please ensure the following information, as much as possible, has been uploaded. If you’re having problems logging in, please see the advice here.
Academic and professional transcripts/Degree Certificates:
If you have already completed your degree, please ensure you provide copies of your full official transcript and degree certificate. (If these documents are not in English, please also provide an officially certified translation of the documents).
If you are a current student, please upload an official transcript to date of your degree as well as a list of classes you will take in the remainder of your degree. (If these documents are not in English, please also provide an officially certified translation of the documents).
Please also include transcripts and/or certificates of any professional qualifications as mentioned in your application.
An up to date CV/resume:
Please include your CV which details all relevant qualifications and work experience.
References:
If you have two references, on official letter-headed paper (and signed by the referee), please upload these.
If you have entered the details of two referees as part of your application form, please ensure the referee's email addresses are included. Please also ensure the email addresses you provide are official (ie a university email account). We tend not to accept references from email addresses such as gMail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.
A personal statement (MSc programmes)
Please provide a personal statement telling us why you wish to study your chosen course. Discuss why your skills, qualities and experience will allow you to be successfully in completing the course. Discuss what you hope to do after you graduate with your MSc. For MBA applications, please complete the required essay questions.
Proof of English Proficiency (for students from a non-majority English speaking country)
If you are from a non-majority English speaking country, please upload evidence of your English language proficiency (ie an IELTS test). Further information on English Language requirements can be found here. In addition, the university’s English Language Teaching Department offers pre-sessional and in-sessional language classes to support our overseas students. One four-week module of pre-sessional English is offered free of charge to all overseas students – an ideal way to orientate yourself before your academic course begins.
A copy of your passport (International Students only)
By providing the above documentation, we will be able to make a decision on your application. If you have any questions about these requirements or are unable to produce this information, please do contact us sbs.admissions@strath.ac.uk
So you have received an offer – what happens next?
Will I receive an offer letter?
Your offer has been passed to our Student Experience & Enhancement Services (SEES) team. They will complete a final check on your application and, once satisfied, will process your offer, which generates a pdf offer letter within your Pegasus application record. Your offer letter will contain a date by which you should accept or decline your offer. When conditions are met, your offer letter is automatically updated to reflect this.
Does this offer mean I have a guaranteed seat on the course?
No. We can only guarantee you a seat on the course once you have satisfied all (academic, administrative and financial) conditions. You should be aware that popular courses tend to fill by June or July each year. Once the course is full, we will have to withdraw offers which have outstanding conditions and in some circumstances offer the chance to defer to the next intake.
What do I do next?
If you wish to accept the offer, you should do so online as soon as possible. If you no longer wish to come to study with us, you should decline your offer online. Information on how to accept your offer in Pegasus can be found here.
What is the deadline to satisfy all the conditions attached to my offer?
We do not have a formal deadline. We operate a rolling admissions system and courses will close once the required number of students has satisfied all their conditions and have a confirmed place on the course. Generally, this takes place between June and August.
I’ve received an academic condition on my offer stating “Provide good quality, authenticated copies of your qualifications as stated in your application” but I’ve already uploaded my transcript and the condition still has a red cross – what does this mean?
This condition remains unticked until we have received copies of all transcripts and certificates. Most commonly, it remains unticked until after you receive your final degree transcript and confirmation of degree award (and please note that not all degree transcripts clearly confirm the title of degree awarded – we may ask you for the final degree certificate or a letter from your institution if this is the case). It may also mean that we need further evidence of your qualifications – please contact us if you’re not sure.
I’ve received an administrative condition on my offer stating “Provide satisfactory confirmation of Academic Progress” – what does this mean? (International Students only)
It is a requirement of UKVI that the university gathers information about your education, including periods of study undertaken previously in the UK. SEES may ask you to complete a short set of questions to satisfy themselves that you meet these UKVI requirements. If SEES emails you a short questionnaire, please respond as quickly as possible to ensure that there is no delay in processing your final documentation and CAS. Further information on this is here.
When should I pay the deposit?
As the deposit is non-refundable, you should only pay the deposit once you have satisfied all conditions on your offer. Details of how to pay the deposit are contained in your offer letter and also detailed here. You can arrange payment of your deposit prior to all academic conditions being met but you should be aware that a refund is only possible if conditions aren’t met (for example, not gaining the required degree or IELTS result).
If your programme is being sponsored by a company or organisation, please provide us with a copy of your sponsorship letter.
When do I receive my CAS – Confirmation of Acceptance for Study? (International students only)
When you have satisfied all academic, administrative and financial conditions and have accepted your offer online, SEES will upload to your Pegasus file a pdf of your Final Letter of Acceptance and will email your CAS. Please note that SEES will issue CAS from around April each year. If you have satisfied all conditions before this date, your CAS will be amongst the first to be issued in April.
When will I receive a reading list and joining instructions for my course?
Joining instructions will be sent to you a month or so before your course starts. You will collect your reading list, course handbook and timetable when you arrive at the university. Your Academic Course Director has designed the course so that every student receives this information at the same time at the start of the course.
When should I apply for university accommodation?
Full details of our accommodation, along with an online application form, can be found at www.strath.ac.uk/accommodation. As accommodation places are limited, we would encourage you to apply for accommodation as soon as you receive an offer from us. Our accommodation office can also provide information on private rented accommodation as well as University accommodation.
Can I contact other students at Strathclyde, or those who will be coming in September?
We manage closed facebook groups for students who have met all academic, administrative and financial conditions coming to SBS which tend to go live around May/June prior to our programmes starting in September. In addition, students and alumni are active on other social networking sites, such as LinkedIn too.
Can I apply for a scholarship?
We offer a number of partial scholarships each year to new students. Further information on available scholarships can be found here. The selection process takes place in June each year, and successful candidates are notified by July. Successful applicants will have the value of the scholarship deducted from their tuition fee. In addition to SBS scholarships, there are a number of wider University and external scholarships listed here.
How do I pay my tuition fees?
Full details about how to pay fees, including payment in advance and payment by instalments can be found here. Fees are noted on your offer letter, Pegasus application and listed online here.
Will the university help me find a job?
The university has an award-winning Careers Service which works with students to help develop the skills and knowledge required to enter the jobs market. The Careers Service does not match students with jobs or provide placements, but does make our students aware of vacancies in appropriate sectors as they arise and provides a wealth of career planning resources. In addition to the University Careers Service, MBA students also have access to a dedicated careers resource within the Strathclyde Business School who will work with our MBA students throughout their period of study.
What about opportunities to work after graduating?
Our Masters courses have a very strong record of employment, with most students finding suitable work within three months of graduating. We cannot guarantee that you will be successful if finding your perfect job, but our Careers Service will help to prepare you for entering the competitive job market in your chosen field. International Students should familiarise themselves with UKVI's regulations with regards to post-study work and information is also available on our website here.
Who can I contact for help before I come to Glasgow/come to the UK?
If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. We know this is a major decision, and we want you to be completely happy with your choice of course and study location.
The University’s information point for international students is helpful not just for international students but to anyone moving to Glasgow from elsewhere: http://www.strath.ac.uk/sees/infoint/ and is full of useful information on everything from Accommodation, Council Tax, bills, registering with a bank or Doctor to arranging a mobile phone contract. This is updated throughout the year and will help prepare you for your time with us.
