ArchitectureGIA & departmental annual awards list

The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) and the Department annually select outstanding students' projects (undergraduate and postgraduate) for awards in a variety of categories. 

GIA Awards 2021

J.B. WILSON
This is an award made to the best student in first year assessed on the basis of portfolio work throughout the year. This alternates per annum with the T.L WATSON Prize  of the same value.

GIA 2nd Year Design Prize
This is an award made to the best student in second year assessed on the basis of a portfolio of work throughout the year.
Award: Callum Grimes            
Commendations: Eilidh McGuigan, Struan Morrison 

GIA 3rd Year Design Prize 
This is an award made to the best student in a particular project in the third year, usually the main project of the year. The project is selected by University staff.
Award: Jakob Young
Commendations: Conor McCormack, Alfie Hollington

GIA 4th Year Design Prize - Best Student in a Particular Subject
This is an award to the best student in Design in final year, part 1. It usually goes to a fourth year student, the assessment being based in the major project of the year.
Award: Rachel McLure
Commendation: Maria Baban

GIA Final Year Parchment - Prize for Outstanding Student in Design in the Final Year Part 2
This is an award made to the outstanding student in Design in Advanced Architectural Design and is awarded to the best student in the final year, Part 2 Course.  The assessment is based on the thesis project.
Award: Tiia Partanen

Special Award for Outstanding Achievement. This award recognises the most talented students across both Glasgow Schools of Architecture

GIA Awards 2020

T.L WATSON Prize
This is an award made to the best student in first year assessed on the basis of portfolio work throughout the year. This alternates per annum with the J.B. WILSON  of the same value.

Postgraduate - Departmental prizes 2020

Professor Charles Gourlay Memorial Prize 
Founded in 1929 by the Royal Technical College Architectural Craftsmen's Society, colleagues, past students and friends as a tribute to the memory of Charles Gourlay, BSc, FRIBA, FSA(Scot), Lecturer in Architecture and Building from 1888 to 1895 and Professor from 1895 to 1926.  Awarded to a meritorious student in the final year of the course in Architecture and to the best student of Building Aspects of the course in the same year.

N Morcos-Asaad Prize 
Founded in 1977 by Professor Fikry N Morcos-Asaad, MArch, SM, PhD, Professor of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde since 1970, in memory of his parents, Mr Naguib Morcos-Asaad and Mrs Marie Morcos-Asaad of Cairo who died while visiting Scotland in 1974.  Awarded annually for excellence in Design on the recommendation of the Professor of Architecture to a student registered for the Diploma in Advanced Architectural Design (formerly the BArch degree)

ASSA Prize for Best Professional Studies 5 Student
To the outstanding student in Design in Advanced Architectural Design awarded to the best student in the final year, Part 2 Course. Assessment based on the thesis project.

Undergraduate  - Departmental prizes 2020

Alexander Mair Scholarship
This scholarship was founded in 1966 under the will of the late Mrs Jessie Mair to commemorate her husband Alexander Mair LRIBA, FRIAS (d.1943) who was a prominent Ayrshire architect and a former student of the Glasgow School of Architecture.  It is awarded annually to a meritorious full-time student of Architecture in the University, preferably a native of Ayrshire.

Edwin Morris Prize
This prize was founded in 1993 by Mrs Margaret Morris in memory of her husband Edwin Morris, BSc MSc FIWc, Reader in the Department of Architecture and Building Science 1947 to 1991.  It is awarded annually to a second year student(s) in Architectural Studies for excellence in the design of a building using timber technology.

Frank Arneil Walker BSc Dissertation Prize
This prize was founded in 2003 by Emeritus Professor Frank Walker to mark his retirement from the Department and to encourage the pursuit of academic writing.  It is awarded to the best dissertation project in fourth year in the field of architectural history and theory.

Dissertation Prize
This prize is awarded to the best overall dissertation project in fourth year.

Glasgow School of Architecture Jubilee Prize
This prize is awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of Department of Architecture and subject to the formal approval of the Glasgow Institute of Architects and the Trustees, to the best student in the final Honours year for the degree of BSc in Architectural Studies.
