futureWind&Marine 2018 Report
futureWind&Marine 2018 took place on Thursday 22nd March 2018 in the Technology & Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde. The event was postponed earlier in the year due to the adverse weather supplied by the ‘Beast from the East’.
futureWind&Marine 2018 was the 6th annual seminar run by the students of the Wind and Marine Energy Systems Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). Previously known as futureWind, the 2018 edition was renamed as the first students to come through the CDT with a focus on marine systems were presenting their research.
With a total attendance of 130 it is the biggest seminar that the CDT has put on to date. 13 presenters, including 7 final year CDT students, treated those in attendance to a wide variety of talks with titles such as; Lifetime extension of wind turbines, Extreme wave formation on sheared currents and Future wind and marine – comments from an economic perspective.
The keynote address was given by Michael Wilkinson from, DNV GL who were title sponsors for this year’s event. The event was also sponsored by SKF, ORE Catapult and ScottishPower Renewables
As well as presentations from final year students there were posters and table top displays from all the 2nd and 3rd year CDT students in the foyer. This demonstrated the diverse range of research going on within the centre. The student run Professional Engineers Training Scheme (PETS) also had a display in the foyer showcasing the outstanding activities that go on outside the students PhD work.
The day concluded with the debate ‘Resilience of Renewables to the Impacts of Climate Change’. This provided such stimulated discussion that small pockets of the debate continued on in one of the many local establishments.
The staff and students from the CDT would like to thank all those who attended for making it such a success. A thank you also to the organising committee for putting in the large amount of time and effort to ensure that the day ran smoothly. Lastly a massive thank you to the event sponsors DNV GL, SKF, ORE Catapult and ScottishPower Renewables. Without whom the day would never have happened.
We look forward to seeing you for our 7th seminar in 2019.
