How does the Library support people with additional needs?

Accessing the Library

The main entrance of the Library is inside the Curran Building, accessed by pedestrian paths from either Cathedral Street or St James Road. Once inside the building there is a flight of stairs leading to the Library entrance.

Access to the Library for those with mobility difficulties is at 101 St James Road. Once inside the Library, eligible students may use the lift (elevator) to move between floors. Please contact Information Services or talk to the University's Disability & Wellbeing Service to arrange access to this lift.

Assistive Technologies room

The Assistive Technologies room is on Level 2 of the Library. Equipment and software includes:

  • CCTV facilities to enlarge print for reading
  • multimedia PCs with relevant software (JAWS screenreader, ZoomText magnifier/reader, Read&Write Gold)
  • scanners with OCR functions

Fetch and Carry book collection service

Our Fetch and Carry book collection service helps students with additional needs to:

  • find books on the shelves, and/or
  • carry books from the shelves

You may be entitled to use our Fetch and Carry service if you have mobility difficulties or a visual impairment.

Ask the staff in the Library for more information. Or contact Information Services.

If you are having difficulty returning/renewing your books on time or paying fines please contact us as soon as possible.

Lift passes are available for those who have difficulty using the stairs. The lift pass will identify you to Library staff as having permission to use the staff lift. To apply for a pass please ask at the Level 3 Enquiry desk or contact Information Services.

There is a limited number of lockers available within the Library. If you would like to use a locker please contact Information Services via email.

We can offer enhanced booking privileges for small bookable rooms in the Library. These include longer booking slots and the ability to book 4 weeks in advance, instead of 2. Contact us by email for assistance.
