Our long-standing student placement scheme is particularly successful, and a our academics have excellent track records for applying their research, making a difference all over the world.

Facilities

We have a range of facilities here in the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry, some of which are available for commercial hire.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

A purpose built unit, it houses magnet room, technical support office, data processing laboratory and sample preparation and handling laboratory.

Mass Spectrometry

The Mass Spectrometry facility provides analysis of novel synthesised compounds, large and small molecules covering a mass range of 50- 150,000Da, depending on the instrument employed.

X-Ray Crystallography

There are both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (SXD and PXRD) facilities available in the Department. Though these normally run samples for Strathclyde based academics, they are also available for commercial hire.

CHN Instrument

CHN Analysis

The elemental analysis facility is equipped for the analysis of the carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content of a wide range of solid materials, including polymers and organometallic compounds. Sample sizes of 10 milligrams are sufficient to obtain good-quality data in duplicate, which is our standard approach. Additional replicates can be provided if required.

Protein Synthesis

This instrument brings us the capability to synthesise peptide and small protein derivatives up to 100 amino acid residues in length. Fast and efficient coupling protocols, together with on-line monitoring and feedback enables the rapid synthesis of complex peptides in a fully automated fashion.

Industrial Placement Scheme

We know how important it is got our students to gain relevant industry experience while they're here at University. We also know how beneficial our students could be to businesses and organisations. That's why we have our Industrial Placement Scheme. It's one of the largest and longest running in the UK and is an integral part of several of our degree courses.

We have a number of opportunities available for external companies and organisations.

We're one of the UK’s top 10 institutions for licence royalty income, based on our researchers’ innovations and discoveries. The University has cumulative royalty income of £42 million and our current IPR portfolio includes around 100 licensing opportunities.
