Introduction

This page provides a list of the Academic Policies, Procedures and Guidance for staff. A policies and procedures web page for students can be found at http://www.strath.ac.uk/sees/studentpolicies/. The Quality Code

All of the University’s academic policies, procedures and guidance must align with the Quality Assurance Agency’s UK Quality Code for Higher Education which is used to assure the standards and quality of higher education in the UK. The Quality Code is broken down into a series of chapters which cover different aspects of higher education. Each chapter sets out an expectation for the topic and a series of indicators that reflect sound practice.

Cycle of Reviews

The University aims to review its academic policies, procedures and guidance every 3 years to ensure they remain compliant with the Quality Code or other external drivers and that they remain consistent with the strategic direction of the University. The academic policies, procedures and guidance should also be reviewed in light of any organisational changes that will impact the terms referenced throughout the documents for example changes to function names or staff job titles. 

ADMISSIONS

The Admissions Policy underpins the University’s approach to the admission of all students, to both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and aims to provide clear detail on the key principles that guide this approach. This policy also covers the University’s Clearing Policy, Dealing with Applications from Students with Criminal Convictions, Provision of Feedback to Unsuccessful Applicants and the Policy and Procedure on the Widening Participation Policy in the Context of Admissions.

This section also provides the Policy on Operating Tier 4 of the Points Based System for Immigration and the Procedure for Admitting and Monitoring Students within Tier 4 of the Points Based System for Immigration.

COURSE DEVELOPMENT

This section contains the Procedure and Guidelines on Course and Class Approval which provides, among other things, timelines for providing details of new courses or major amendments to existing courses to Senate and O&R Working Group. INTERNAL REVIEW PROCEDURES

This section provides the University Policy and Procedures on Departmental Reviews. Institution-led reviews within all Faculties is an holistic one in which Learning and Teaching, Research, Management and the interactions between them are given full consideration. Guidance is also provided on the contents of the self-assessment document.

VOLUNTARY SUSPENSION

Students needing to interrupt their studies may apply to go into voluntary suspension. In allowing any student to enter voluntary suspension the guiding principle is that the student must, on exiting voluntary suspension, be able to resume studies and complete their course as if their studies had been uninterrupted.

The maximum period of voluntary suspension approved at any one time will be one complete academic session. Under exceptional circumstances, voluntary suspension may be renewed for one further session.
