Centres for Doctoral TrainingStrathclyde Centres for Doctoral Training
The Strathclyde Centres for Doctoral Training (SCDTs) build on the success of the UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training model. These have been established to drive research intensity in emerging disciplines and areas of strategic importance.
Central to each SCDT is a cohort-based training approach that provides PhD students with a stimulating and supportive research environment. This model encourages peer-to-peer learning, while also offering structured opportunities to engage with industry, public sector partners, and other academic institutions.
Through tailored training programmes and dedicated industry engagement activities, SCDTs equip doctoral researchers with in-demand skills and access to professional networks that enhance both academic and career development. The centres also offer a range of competitive PhD funding opportunities, including full and partial support.
Many SCDTs also support our innovative ‘PhD@Work’ delivery model, designed for professionals who are currently in employment and wish to undertake research on a specific topic or challenge relevant to both their area of practice and the focus of the SCDT. Participants in this route collaborate closely with an academic supervisor at the University of Strathclyde and an industry-based supervisor, joining cohort-based training activities where possible. This model enables candidates to make a meaningful contribution to knowledge and push the boundaries of research within each centre’s thematic area.
