The development of better medicines is a multidisciplinary endeavor which requires expertise in areas ranging from identification of new targets to drug design and testing.
This requires an effective drug discovery cascade including medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences and biological validation in appropriate disease models.
The translation of new drugs also relies on developing appropriately formulated drug like molecules and drug delivery systems.
The development of better medicines with fewer side effects that are cost effective and appropriately utilised is vital. However, this process is not just about the drug discovery process but also repurposing of existing drugs and therapy, combining treatments for patients specific benefit and prescribing and utilising drugs so that they are optimally effective.
