Sarah Di Ganci (LLM Human Rights Law)

It is with great appreciation that I write this statement on the real-life personal, professional and academic effects of being a recipient of the John Fitzsimons Memorial Scholarship Fund Award.

The award has allowed me to return to the study at Strathclyde where I secure a place on the LLM in Human Rights law path of study at the Law School. I had previously earned a Graduate Entry LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice. I had also attended Strathclyde as a school-leaver where I earned a BA (Hons) Psychology and more recently I completed a Medication Skills Certificate.

While studying, I am working as a Support for Learning Worker in a complex needs primary school which allows me to prioritise my daughters’ routine while furthering my own education and the school itself is also an inspiring learning environment. I am benefitting hugely from working with Katie Boyle, Professor of Human Rights Law and Social Justice at Strathclyde, as a Research Fellow in Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. This is a needed area of legal research, especially with the Human Rights Scotland Bill, incorporation of which will enhance accountability for human rights obligations in issues that affect people’s everyday lives in Scotland.

I am grateful for the peace of mind that this award has given me during my studies in the shorter term, but also going forward knowing that I will be able to hit the ground running after graduation.

Zoe Silver (LLB)

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the John Fitzsimons scholarship that I have received. It has made a significant difference in my life and has provided much-needed support during a challenging time.

As a single mother struggling with finances, the assistance provided by the John Fitzsimons Fund has been invaluable. It has alleviated some of the financial burdens I faced and has allowed me to better provide for myself and my family.

Knowing that there are resources available for people like me who are navigating difficult circumstances gives me hope and inspires me to persevere.

I've always been passionate about the law and justice - since I was very young, it has interested me. I'm eager to dive into this field, work hard, and hopefully achieve success. My dream is to one day give back to the John Fitzsimmons Scholarship Fund so that more people like me can benefit.
