Why this course?
Organisations increasingly rely on data to inform decisions about their people. This MSc Human Resource Management & People Analytics responds directly to that shift, equipping you with the skills to combine HR expertise with data‑driven insight.
The course brings together core human resource management (HRM) with practical analytical training. You’ll learn how to analyse and interpret workforce data, and how to translate evidence into effective people strategies that address real organisational challenges.
You’ll study within Strathclyde Business School's Department of Work, Employment & Organisation, one of the UK’s leading centres for HRM research, including the Scottish Centre for Employment Research. Teaching also draws on expertise from across the University, giving you exposure to areas such as data analytics and machine learning.
Designed for both recent graduates and working professionals, the programme supports careers in HR, people analytics and organisational development.

The MSc has a strong applied focus, shaped by the University’s links with organisations across the public, private and third sectors. Through modules such as People Analytics and Professional Practice, you’ll work on real or simulated organisational and data-driven challenges.
This will help you develop practical skills in analysing data, presenting insights and making recommendations. You’ll also benefit from guest input and opportunities to learn how organisations use data to address people management challenges in practice.
Our programme supports the development of critical thinking and reflective practice. In a changing and data-driven workplace, it's important to understand both the opportunities and limitations of using data in people management.
You'll learn how to evaluate evidence, question assumptions and apply your knowledge across different organisational contexts. You’ll also develop collaborative skills through group work and shared problem solving.

What you’ll study
Semester 1
In Semester 1, you will develop a foundation in HRM and data analysis. You will study research methods, quantitative analysis, and the role of technology in shaping work and organisations.
You will build analytical skills through modules such as Advanced Quantitative Methods and Big Data Fundamentals. You will also study core HR topics including leadership, motivation and engagement.
A key part of the course is the people analytics module, which runs across both semesters. This module focuses on how data is used to inform HR decisions in practice.
Semester 2
In Semester 2, you'll continue to develop your analytical and HR knowledge. You will apply your learning through a consultancy-based module focused on real or simulated organisational challenges.
You will also choose from a small number of optional modules, allowing you to focus more on analytics or qualitative research. In the final stage of the course, you will complete a dissertation on a topic related to HRM or people analytics.

This module introduces the key concepts and applications of people analytics. You will learn how to analyse workforce data, interpret results and apply insights to HR decision making. The module runs across both semesters and links analytical tools with organisational context.

Research Foundations

This module introduces research methods used in HRM and people analytics. You will learn about research design, data collection and basic analysis. It prepares you for more advanced research and your dissertation.

Advanced Quantitative Methods
10 credits
This module develops your ability to analyse data. You'll learn techniques such as regression and hypothesis testing, and how to interpret results in organisational settings.

People, Technology & Work
10 credits
This module will cover theoretical and critical perspectives across the following content:
- design of jobs and work environments considering the wider context of automation and digitalisation of work and employment
- human factors and ergonomics
- workplace safety, risk management, and error prevention
- organisational effectiveness, productivity, performance
Assessment:
- One practical individual exercise (50%)
- Final Exam (50%)
Leadership, Engagement & Motivation
10 credits
This module will introduce theories of attitude and behaviour in the workplace, as well as performance management challenges including:
- motivation and leadership in the workplace
- engagement, commitment, values and organisational citizenship
- appraisal and management of performance and potential
- psychological contract and perceptions of justice
- derailment and counterproductive behaviours
- power, influence and negotiation in organisations
- psychology of groups, teams and teamwork
Assessment:
- Five mid-semester class tests (total weighting 50%)
- Final exam (50%)
Big Data Fundamentals
10 credits
This module will introduce the challenges of analysing big data with specific focus on the algorithms and techniques which are embodied in data analytics solutions.
At the end of the module, you'll understand:
- the fundamentals of Python for use in big data technologies
- how classical statistical techniques are applied in modern data analysis
- the limitations of various data analysis tools in a variety of contexts
Assessment:
- Individual coursework (100%)
Research Design
This module develops your ability to design a research project. You'll prepare a research proposal and develop the skills needed for your dissertation.
Assessment:
- Individual research project presentation (30%)
- Main draft of research proposal (70%)
Critical Issues in HRM
10 credits
The aim of the module is to build upon core theories and strategic practices of HRM by examining emerging developments in people management, within complex and volatile global business environments.
Assessment:
- Individual essay on variable topic (50%)
- Group presentation and report (50%)
People Analytics & Professional Practice (Consultancy)
10 credits
This module focuses on applying people analytics in practice. You'll work on real or simulated organisational problems and develop skills in communication, reporting and stakeholder engagement.
Assessment:
- Three assessments aligned to a practical task (30%)
- Final individual assignment aligned to chartership process (70%) submitted at end of the semester
Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Data Analytics
10 credits
This module introduces machine learning concepts and techniques. You'll learn how these methods can be applied to organisational data.
Assessment:
- One individual assignment worth (50%)
- One-hour examination (50%)
Dissertation
60 credits
During the summer, you'll undertake an independent research project with the support of an academic supervisor. This may involve working with organisational or secondary datasets, allowing you to explore real people management and workforce analytics questions.
The project is designed to help you apply and extend the knowledge and skills developed throughout the programme. You’ll design and carry out a research study, using appropriate analytical methods to investigate a defined problem. You’ll develop your ability to interpret data, evaluate evidence and communicate findings clearly in a professional format. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss your work with academic and practitioner audiences.
The dissertation prepares you for roles that require data-informed decision making and the ability to translate analysis into practical insights. It also provides a foundation for those interested in progressing to further research or doctoral study.
Advanced Machine Learning for Data Analytics
10 credits
This module provides more advanced coverage of machine learning techniques for students who want to develop deeper analytical skills.
Assessment: two individual assignments worth 50% each (weekly quiz and assignment 2)
Business Analytics
10 credits
This module explores how data is used in business decision making, including optimisation and strategy.
Assessment:
- Individual assignment on optimisation (45%)
- Group assignment on AI (55%)
Advanced Qualitative Methods
10 credits
This module develops qualitative research skills. You'll learn how to design interviews and analyse qualitative data in organisational research.
Assessment:
- Individual interview schedule development task (30%)
- Individual analysis report (70%)
Entry requirements
| Academic requirements | Minimum 2:2 degree in a field relevant to studying human resource management and people analytics. Previous experience of data analysis or coding (for example Python) is desirable but not required. |

Pre-Masters preparation course
The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course held at the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre, for international students (non-UK/Ireland) who do not meet the academic entry requirements for a Masters degree at University of Strathclyde.
Upon successful completion, you'll be able to progress to this degree course at the University of Strathclyde.

Fees may be subject to updates to maintain accuracy. Tuition fees will be notified in your offer letter.
All fees are in £ sterling, unless otherwise stated, and may be subject to revision.
Annual revision of fees
Students on programmes of study of more than one year (or studying standalone modules) should be aware that the majority of fees will increase annually.
The University will take a range of factors into account, including, but not limited to, UK inflation, changes in delivery costs and changes in Scottish and/or UK Government funding. Changes in fees will be published on the University website in October each year for the following year of study and any annual increase will be capped at a maximum of 10% per year. This cap will apply to fees from 2026/27 onwards, which will not increase by more than 10% from the previous year for continuing students.
