MEngSports Engineering

Why this course?

Sports engineers design new products and/or improve and measure sports performance.

The course allows you to develop the tools and techniques of product design within sports product development. This includes knowledge of the physiological response of the body when taking part in sports and using sporting equipment.

This course is run by the Design, Manufacture & Engineering Management with significant input from other specialist departments.

You’ll develop skills in aesthetics and graphic communication alongside those in sports science, materials and manufacturing.

What you’ll study

In addition to the core classes, you can choose from a wide range of elective subjects.

Years 1 & 2

You’ll study the basics of a variety of engineering disciplines, materials, mathematics, design principles and production and management.

Years 3, 4 & 5

You’ll study more advanced modules in industrial design, mechatronics and computer-aided design (CAD), together with scientific aspects of sports and exercise.

Year 4

In addition to choosing a range of option classes, you’ll focus on individual and group project work.

Major Projects

You'll undertake an individual sports design project in Year 4 and Year 5.  This is conceived, developed and tested by you. You'll also complete an industrial group project in Year 4 and 5 with a local sports organisation.

As part of the MEng, you'll also complete a research project where you look at the theory behind a particular sport, product or process and attempt to provide an academic contribution to the field.

Work Placement

We encourage our students to pursue work placements as part of the course. Students have undertaken placements at sports companies including Berghaus and Adidas. These normally take place in the summer between Years 3 and 4 but can also be up to one year.

Study abroad

In Year 3 you’ll have the option to study in Australia, Canada, North America, Singapore or a location in Europe.


We provide a dynamic and stimulating environment with flexible studio space and modern laboratories as well as a suite of computer facilities.

Year 1

Integrating Studies 1
This class aims to develop a broad range of knowledge and skill concerned with studentship, professionalism and ICT and a technical working knowledge of product development resources, processes and procedures.
Introduction to Production Engineering & Management
This class is a foundation class that aims to provide you with an overview of industry as well as management theory and practice, emphasising the key role of managers and engineers within organisations. It also aims to provide you with a general appreciation of the types of organisation and range of processes and materials employed in production.
Technology Concepts
To introduce you to the language of technology and stimulate awareness of the basic ideas, laws and science which underpins technology.

Year 2

Design 2
The aim of this class is to provide continuation of the first year classes, oncentrating on techniques appropriate to different phases of the design process including user centred research, conceptual, embodiment and detailed design.
Integrating Studies 2
This class aims to develop the your ability to create appropriate functional prototypes for the purposes of mechanical design and visualisation. To engender an appreciation of different prototyping methods and their application areas.
Production Techniques 1
This class aims to increase the depth of production technology knowledge gained in the first year Introduction to Production and Engineering Management class. It introduces you to primary processes for metal and polymer production, metal cutting theory, secondary manufacturing processes, engineering metrology, and the manufacture of electronic components and products.
Sports Engineering
This class aims to enable you to understand both the basic principles of fluid mechanics and materials choice and apply this knowledge to the design and evaluation of the performance of athletes and their equipment

Year 3

Integrating Studies 3
This class aims to develop design and manufacturing project based skills relevant to each of the four undergraduate degree courses, and to provide practice in the application of engineering, manufacture and design principles.
Product Development
This methods based class aims to develop and enhance your knowledge of the issues, concepts, methodologies and methods involved in product design and development.
Mechatronics Design & Applications
This class aims to provide you with an understanding of the fundamental concepts and methods of mechatronic system design and applications including those in manufacturing industry.

Year 4

Advanced Design Methods
This class builds upon the knowledge of Design Methods acquired in DM306. It'll develop knowledge and understanding of the integration, development and application of design methods.  This is in the areas of design for manufacture and assembly, sustainability, cost and design for Xs at embodiement and detail design level.
Advanced Product Design & Manufacture
This class aims to introduce design and manufacturing techniques and systems at an advanced level. It enables you to understand the application of advanced product design engineering and manufacturing techniques/systems in product development (in particular in mechatronic systems). This includes developing manufacturing plans for product realisation. It provides opportunities for you to develop technology focused products/systems within the class supervised environment as well as to generate plans for the manufacture of these products/systems for volume production.
Individual Project 1
This class aims to consolidate and develop experience in undertaking a major individual project and develop a good appreciation of professional practice by utilising design, manufacturing and management knowledge acquired during the course and applying it to real life situations.
You'll create a working prototype for a sports product to a detailed level demonstrating knowledge of specific course related expertise.
Industrial Group Project 1
This class aims to integrate and apply design, manufacturing and management knowledge and skills, acquired in previous years of the course, to an industry based product development project and to develop team project skills.
Quality Management
This class aims to equip you with a critical understanding of Quality Management and Control principles, concepts, tools and techniques. The class also aims to introduce you to statistically plan, design and execute industrial experiments for process understanding and improvement in both manufacturing and service environments.

Year 5

UG Individual Project 2
This class aims to consolidate and develop experience in undertaking a major individual project and develop a good appreciation of professional practice by utilising design, manufacturing and management knowledge acquired during the course and applying it to real life situations.

You'll demonstrate knowledge of specific course related expertise.  You'll create and evaluate a working prototype for a sports related project, understanding the dynamics for specific sports, biomechanics, etc.
Industrial Group Project 2
This class aims to integrate and apply design, manufacturing and management knowledge and skills, acquired in previous years of the course, to an industry based product development project and to develop team project skills.
Research Studies
This class will develop research skills and acquire an in depth knowledge of a relevant research field.
Industrial Placement 4

This class aims for you to gain experience at undertaking a project within industry and demonstrate an ability to relate theory to practice and vice versa.

Summer placement

Between Years 3 and 4 and Years 4 and 5, you can undertake an approved summer industrial placement. You’ll be awarded credits if you successfully complete it.

Degree preparation course for international students

We offer international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the academic entry requirements for an undergraduate degree at Strathclyde the option of completing an Undergraduate Foundation year programme at the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to progress to this degree course at the University of Strathclyde.

How much will my course cost?

All fees quoted are for full-time courses and per academic year unless stated otherwise.


  • 2019/20: £1,820

Rest of UK

  • 2019/20: £9,250

Assuming no change in Rest of UK fees policy over the period, the total amount payable by undergraduate students will be capped. For students commencing study in 2017/18, this is capped at £27,750 (with the exception of the MPharm and Integrated Masters courses); MPharm students pay £9,250 for each of the four years. Students studying on Integrated Masters degree programmes pay an additional £9,250 for the Masters year with the exception of those undertaking a full-year industrial placement where a separate placement fee will apply.

Faculty of Engineering Excellence Scholarship (FEES) for International Students

If you're applying for an undergraduate course you'll be eligible to apply for a Faculty of Engineering Excellence Scholarship offering up to £4,000 towards your tuition fees for your first year of study and an additional £1,500 for each subsequent year.

The scholarship is available for application to all self-funded, new international (non-EU) fee paying students holding an offer of study for an undergraduate programme in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. Please note you must have an offer of study for a full-time course at Strathclyde before applying.

You must start your full-time undergraduate programme at Strathclyde in the coming academic year (2019-20).

How to apply – 10 things you need to know

  1. All undergraduate applications are made through UCAS
    Go to the UCAS website to apply – you can apply for up to five courses.
  2. It costs £12 to apply for a course
    The cost is £23 for two to five courses.
  3. The deadline is 15 January each year
    This is the application deadline for most courses. However, please check the details for your particular course. View a full list of UCAS key dates.

    Applications are still welcome from international students (non-EU) and those living in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  4. You might be asked to attend an interview
    Most of our courses make offers based on the UCAS application. However some might ask you to attend an interview or for a portfolio of work. If this is the case, this will be stated in the prospectus entry requirements.
  5. It’s possible to apply directly to Year 2
    Depending on your qualifications, you might be able to apply directly to Year 2 - or even Year 3 - of a course. Speak to the named contact for your course if you want to discuss this.
  6. There’s three types of decision
    • unconditional – you’ve already met our entry requirements
    • conditional – we’ll offer you a place if you meet certain conditions, usually based on your exams
    • unsuccessful – we’ve decided not to offer you a place
  7. You need to contact UCAS to accept your offer
    Once you’ve decided which course you’d like to accept, you must let UCAS know. You don’t need to decide until you’ve received all offers. UCAS will give you a deadline you must respond by.

    You’ll choose one as your firm choice. If the offer is unconditional or if you meet the conditions, this is the course you’ll study.

    You’ll also have an insurance choice. This is a back-up option if you don’t meet the conditions of your first choice.
  8. You don’t need to send us your exam results (Scotland, England & Wales)
    If you’re studying in Scotland, England or Wales, we receive a copy of your Higher/Advanced Higher/A Level results directly from the awarding body. However, if you are studying a different qualification, then please contact us to arrange to send your results directly.
