IoP Paper Featured on Front Page of Applied Physics Letters

Featured on the front page of the current issue of Applied Physics Letters is work carried out by Institute of Photonics researcher Dr Paulo Moriya and PhD student Martin Lee, supervised by Professor Jennifer Hastie, reporting the development of a compact, highly stable, monolithic-cavity, VECSEL with electronically tunable emission wavelength centred at 689.4425 nm. The laser has ultra-low frequency and intensity noise resulting in a free-running, sub-kHz integrated (2 s) linewidth, suitable for neutral Sr-based quantum technologies, such as optical clocks and atom interferometry. This work was supported by the UK Quantum Technology Hub for Sensing and Timing.

IoP Staff and Students joined Strathclyde Principal & Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Jim McDonald at Buckingham Palace at an award ceremony in Buckingham Palace, London, today to collect the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.
IoP Senior Researcher, Dr. Lucia Caspani receives €2 million ERC grant

A quantum physics imaging project, with applications in microscopy, has received a grant of nearly €2 million from the European Research Council (ERC). The QuNim (Quantum-enhanced nonlinear imaging) project is aiming to develop a system which enables enhanced 3D imaging of a biological sample through the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, in which two particles are interlinked and display a degree of correlation not possible in the classical world.
Long-serving IoP staff member recognised by prestigious Strathclyde Medal

Dr Ian Watson, one of the originally appointed Research Team Leaders in the Institute, who joined in 1998, has been recognised for his distinguished and exemplary service to the University of Strathclyde over the past 25 years. In a dedicated ceremony on 17th November, hosted by the University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Ian was one of only 16 staff from across the University to have his contributions recognised by award of an Individual Strathclyde Medal. Ian has been a remarkable colleague to all those who have been privileged to work with him. He has unique expertise in compound semiconductors and all aspects of microfabrication and he has underpinned the Institute’s broad range of work across all areas of optoelectronic materials and devices. His thoroughness and dedication in all aspects of his work, and his loyalty to and support of his colleagues, have been evident throughout all his time at Strathclyde. Many congratulations, Ian!
