  • Award-winning student reveals youthful benefits of marine engineering

    As maritime attention turns to the young with IMarEST’s Future Leaders Forum, we speak to Orla McEntee about the attraction of a life in marine engineering. “From a young age, I’ve always been interested in engines and things that move. You get Lego sets as a child and it is great fun to see things work after you’ve put them together. Then, when you grow up, it feels like you just get to work with bigger Lego sets!” Orla laughs. Orla’s interest and success in this area is a key example of what young engineers can bring to the marine sector. It is also a perfect example of what the maritime industry can offer in return: the chance to be involved in practical developments that will make the world a better place.

    Recently, Marie Sklodowska-Curie researcher Shahroz Khan has been working on Generative AI, the technology which is at the heart of models like ChatGPTs (which have taken the tech world by storm in the last few years), for ship generation.   • Safety Challenges at Sea: Data and Evidence - Published: 23/11/21

    The report, which is prepared jointly by the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and Bespoke Consultancy and Research from HSE, critically evaluates the maritime occupational injuries and fatalities in international merchant shipping over the last 20 years by reviewing the reported studies and publications.

Scientists at the University of Strathclyde believe they have discovered the reason – which could have applications in maritime shipping too.

    The 6th MASHCON Conference

     The 6th MASHCON conference will be held at the Technology & Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, from 22 to 26 May 2022. The conference will have a non-exclusive focus on port manoeuvres, but a large number of papers dealing with other aspects related to manoeuvring in shallow and confined water, such as shallow water effects.
